Vismodegib must not be used during pregnancy because it may cause serious harm (possibly death) to an unborn baby. Women of childbearing age must have a negative pregnancy test within 7 days before starting this medication. They must also use a reliable form of birth control before starting vismodegib, while taking it, and for 7 months after the last dose of vismodegib. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, tell your doctor immediately (see Precautions section).
Vismodegib passes into semen. Men taking vismodegib, even men who have had a vasectomy, must use condoms with spermicide during sex with women of childbearing age, both during treatment with vismodegib and for 2 months after the last dose of this medication.
This medication is used to treat adults with a type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma. It is used if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, has come back after surgery, or if your doctor decides that the cancer cannot be treated by surgery or radiation. It works by blocking the Hedgehog pathway found in basal cancer cells and only a few normal cells, such as hair follicles.
